Solution Options for Seniors (S.O.S)
Iowans are living longer than ever before, with one out of every five residents now aged 60 or older. That number is expected to grow over the next few decades, with the vast majority of individuals stating they would prefer to age in place, in their homes and their community. As an alternative to institutional care, some older adults may move into the home of a caregiver, often times the home of a son or daughter.
The Solutions for Seniors (SOS) program provides financial assistance for unplanned and unexpected expenses with home repairs or home modification that come with aging in place. It is also available to family members who are moving their parents or older adults into a caregiver's home. This assistance program is not based on income, but on financial need.
Some examples of eligible projects are: bathroom remodels, furnace and/or A/C replacement due to medical needs, electrical repair, plumbing repairs, modifications to assist with accessibility such as floor remodel, counter tops lowered, changing door handles, widening doorways, grab bars, ramps, etc.
The amount of assistance is determined at the time of application and the amount of funding available. Individuals who receive Medicaid Waiver services may have other restrictions due to funding limits.
To be eligible for financial assistance through Solutions Options for Seniors, the person must be:
- A person who is age 60+ or caregiver caring for someone who is 60+ who resides within the caregiver's home.
- A homeowner for home repairs or modifications or needing accessibility modification for a vehicle.
- Must reside within one of our 20 county service area. For a map of our service area.
Partnerships with Southern Iowa Council of Governments and Pottawattamie County Housing Trust Fund assists with the costs of projects in Adair, Adams, Clarke, Decatur, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Taylor, and Union counties.
